What is Process Printing?

Calling it by many names, such as 4-color process printing, digital printing, or CMYK, process printing is a versatile technique used in various printing scenarios, especially for promotional products.

Using this method, a full spectrum of colors is achieved using four key inks: Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black (CMYK). These inks layer over each other in different degrees of transparency, allowing the recreation of various colors in the spectrum. This method is primarily used to produce vibrantly realistic, photographic images.

For a deeper understanding of process printing, here's what you need to know:

  1.     Print Quality and Versatility: Process printing delivers excellent image clarity, producing detailed, photo-realistic, full-color images. The technique is used by many inkjet computer printers to create stunningly vibrant outputs.
  2.     Simulated Process Printing: This is an advanced screen printing technique that reproduces full-color images with fewer ink colors. Instead of blending process colors (CMYK), it applies halftones of individual (spot) colors. The result? Tiny dots that are blended into a continuous tone, full-color image by the human eye. However, this printing technique requires significant expertise, and is not offered by every screen printer.
  3.     Benefits of Simulated Process Printing: The technique's core strengths lie in reduced cost (as screen printing costs are impacted by the number of colors used), improved image clarity, and a broader range of color due to the use of individual (spot) colors. However, for designs with fine text or sharp, vector-like edges, other printing techniques might be more suitable.
Process printing, especially the simulated process, adds a level of versality to screen printing, offering several benefits. It depends on your project's requirements and the design intricacies to determine the optimal printing technique.
